Where to go in Africa in November, December and January

Best places to visit in Africa in November, December & January: Cape Town

Planning an African escape between November and January? . The options of where to go in Africa seem to be endless. But this three-month stretch marks a fascinating shift across the continent. From turtle nesting on South Africa’s shores to desert-adapted elephants in Namibia.

It’s the tail-end of the dry season in most of Africa (and the start of the Mediterranean summer season in the Cape.) So there are certain areas of the continent that are definitely better to visit than others.

Here’s your insider guide to where to go and why, crafted by the Cedarberg Africa experts who live and breathe these landscapes.

Cape Town

Where to go in Africa in November

The peak safari crowds have dispersed, safari prices ease, and the landscapes begin to blush green again. November is the start of Africa’s “green season,” when the air is fresh, the skies dramatic, and photographic light at its best.

The days are also getting longer and warmer in Southern Africa. So whether you are visiting the Indian Ocean Islands or South Africa, a beach holiday could be high up on your list!

South Africa

Northern Maputuland in Kwazulu-Natal becomes the stage for one of nature’s most moving spectacles: hundreds of leatherback turtles lumbering ashore to lay their eggs. Visit in November and witness hundreds of Leatherback Turtles laying their eggs on the beach. Or later in January and February to see the hatchlings making a dash for the safety of the sea.

In the Cape, long sunny days return, with the last whales of the season lingering in Hermanus.

Although it is the start of the rainy season in the Greater Kruger, it is a fantastic time to see the migratory birds arriving en masse, perfect for keen birders.

Insider Tip: The early rains bring new life and vivid greenery, making it ideal for photographers and nature lovers alike.

Green season safaris are ideal in the Eastern Cape which offers a more transitional climate with less of a distinctive summer rain pattern.

Namibia

This is one of the best times of the year to encounter the Desert Adapted Elephant in Namibia’s Damaraland. With only a few hundred left, sightings in November feel truly special.

Ethiopia

If culture calls, head north. November is a wonderful time to explore Lalibela’s rock-hewn churches and the ancient cities of Axum and Gondar—without the peak season crowds.

It’s also the tail end of the dry season in countries like Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Malawi, when safari lodges offer excellent value green-season rates in November and December.

Some Zambia camps close by mid or end November.

Where to go in Africa in December

Cue the soundtrack from Grease: “Summer lovin’, having a blast…” December in South Africa is all about sunshine, surf, and festive spirit.

If it’s the sun and sand you are longing for, plan your trip for this time of year.

TIP: If you can avoid the actual Festive season, we recommend it as this is South Africa’s busiest time with Festive supplements, busy beaches and booked out restaurants.

South Africa

Expect warm, sunny weather across South Africa  and plenty of buzz as locals head off on their long summer holidays. From the Cape Winelands to Garden Route beaches, book early: accommodation fills up fast.

Indian Ocean Islands

This is prime island season. Whether you’re lounging in Mauritius, diving in Mozambique, or island-hopping in the Seychelles, expect balmy seas, lush scenery, and postcard-perfect beaches.

Where to go on in Africa in January

January continues the summer rhythm. South Africa still shines, while East Africa hits its stride for safari lovers.

Kenya and Tanzania

With short grass and clear visibility, January is excellent for wildlife viewing. The migration tends to be down in the southern Serengeti and Tarangire.

Whilst over in Kenya, game drives and walking safaris are at their best in the Masai Mara and Laikipia with plenty of resident wildlife and accompanying predators.

South Africa

By mid month, South Africans will have returned to work and school respectively, leaving beaches and reserves blissfully less crowded. So this is a great time to enjoy the summer… the weather is just too good to go anywhere else!

Enjoy beautiful warm days in most parts of the country. It is also a great time to go on a safari in the Eastern Cape or Northern Kwazulu-Natal.

Along Coastal Maputaland, also  in KwaZulu Natal, afternoon showers freshen the air, and the sea stays deliciously warm. It’s also turtle hatchling season—a once-seen, never-forgotten experience.
