Executive Summary (TL;DR )
Both Thonga Beach Lodge (South Africa) and White Pearl Resorts (Mozambique) offer idyllic Indian Ocean escapes, but they’re designed for slightly different travellers. Thonga is an eco-lodge with local charm and soul; White Pearl is a polished resort with loads of coastal glamour. Both promise warm waters, diving, and turtle tracking, but the vibe, and experience differ significantly.
Two Resorts, One Coastline — Two Very Different Vibes
I’ve had the pleasure of staying with my family at both Thonga Beach Lodge, a beach resort on Coastal Maputaland in South Africa, and White Pearl Resorts, a Mozambique resort only 30-40km to north on the other side of the border.
Both are stunning Indian Ocean escapes, but they offer quite distinct styles of beach living.
Thonga Beach Lodge – Eco-Chic, Intimate, and Deeply Local
A stylish relaxed lodge discreetly tucked into coastal forest beside secluded Mabibi Bay. It’s relaxed, authentic, and quietly stylish.
What stands out most is the staff. Almost all are from the local village, and their warmth and confidence shines through. My sons made friends with the barman who delighted them with endless card tricks and even showed them the tricks of the trade. It was one of those small, joyful touches that make a stay memorable.
Because of strict environmental rules, Thonga blends into its surroundings. So when you are walking along the beach, you can hardly see the lodge at all.
Thus only some of its 12 rooms have sea views; the rest have more of a forest view. The main lodge hides behind the forested dunes. But the beach deck, where everyone gathers for sunset drinks or private dinners, more than makes up for it.
Personally this didn’t really hassle me as you spend much of your day at the beach, either relaxing or snorkelling, but it’s worth noting.

Activities & Experiences
What I also like about Thonga is that they have a range of excursions on offer.
- Ocean Experience – whale watching and snorkelling trips by boat (supplement).
- Daily snorkelling – directly from the beach reef (included)
- Canoeing or sundowners – on Lake Sibaya (included).
- Cultural encounters – local village visits (included).
- Scuba diving and PADI courses (supplement)
- Spa treatments (supplement)
Many excursions are included in your stay, which is rare for a beach lodge. A giant chalkboard at breakfast lets you plan your day’s adventures.
I recommend the Ocean Experience which is a whale-watching and snorkelling excursion by boat.

Style & Atmosphere
Thonga has steadily upgraded its rooms over the years since I first visited. They now have an Ocean suite with its own plunge pool. But Thonga isn’t flashy; it’s supremely comfortable, characterful, and calm. Think barefoot luxury rather than glossy glamour. Plus the food is excellent
It is also much smaller than White Pearl. If you were staying for a long time, like a week, you may wish for more space in the public areas.
Overall it has a more barefoot luxury beach vibe about it. Whereas White Pearl is more The Caribbean comes to Mozambique…

Thonga for Families
Families are very welcome with a Family suite catering for up to 4 . They also offer kid’s meal options for younger visitors. And babysitting is available — yet it never feels overrun.
So is equally suitable for couples and honeymooners, as well as families.

Recommended for:
- People who love small, nature-integrated lodges
- Families looking for connection and adventure
- Honeymooners seeking serenity rather than pool bars
White Pearl Resorts
Cross into Mozambique and you’ll find a completely different mood. White Pearl Resorts is sleek, airy, and cinematic. Think “The Hamptons meets the tropics.”
Every suite has a sea view, thanks to more flexible development rules in Mozambique, so the resort feels open and bright. (It also means that the lodge is more noticeable from the beach.)
The property ranges across five levels, with beach front villas closest to the shore, and most expensive, and hilltop suites offering spectacular views. The back level is my favourite option, after the beach front suites, as they have the best views and privacy. The three hillside levels do offer a little bit of a work-out to walk back to your suite. (Though golf carts are also available if you don’t feel like it).

Activities
The beach experience & activities are very similar. You can also do snorkelling directly from the beach in a sheltered lagoon, scuba diving and PADI dive courses.
Facilities & Vibe
But there’s more of a Mozambique ‘’resort’’ rather lodge vibe.
- Pool bar with in-water stools – bliss on hot tropical days.
- Second infinity pool overlooking the ocean.
- Poolside tapas restaurant serving Portuguese-style small plates.
- Signature activity: the snorkelling and dolphin/whale shark swim experience.
White Pearl’s service is friendly but can feel a little slower compared to Thonga’s seamless rhythm. It’s still fine-tuning its five-star polish.
We loved the snorkelling/dolphin boat excursion where you can swim with the dolphins. When in fact we swam with the whale shark instead. One of my top five ocean experiences EVER!
Note: At certain times of the year, you might also see the Southern Right Whales at either lodge.
Crossing the Border
Being a Mozambique beach resort, you must cross the border so that extra time needs to be taken into consideration.
US Dollar Prices
White Pearl is also priced in US Dollars ( in line with the rest of Mozambique). Given the current rand versus the dollar rate, this means that it’s more expensive than Thonga Beach Lodge (and that isn’t exactly cheap.

Recommended for:
- Couples and honeymooners looking for refined luxury
- Safari-goers ending their trip with a beach finale
- Those who dream of swimming with dolphins or even whale sharks
Other differences:

Turtle Tracking
Both lodges offer turtle-tracking between November and March when Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles’ nest.
- Thonga Beach Lodge has a permit to allow turtle-tracking by 4×4 vehicle (only at high tide) at extra cost), offering a far greater range and success rate.
- White Pearl conducts turtle tracking guided walks directly from the lodge on a complimentary basis. Charming, but sightings are less guaranteed, given the relative distance covered.
If turtle encounters are a Must, Thonga edges ahead.
Meal Basis
Thonga is Full Board and includes several activities. White Pearl is usually on a Dinner, Bed & Breakfast but with a nice selection of tapas options throughout the day at the pool restaurant. Or lunch at the main restaurant.
However White Pearl does now offer a Fully Inclusive option as well.

If you crave a soulful, eco-luxe escape with community warmth, Thonga Beach Lodge wins. If you prefer a sleek, modern resort with postcard views and poolside glamour, White Pearl Resorts delivers.
Either way, you’ll be surrounded by the turquoise waters, golden sands and plenty of snorkelling and diving that make Southern Africa’s east coast so magical.
