On arrival at Skukuza Airport in the Kruger National Park you are met and transferred by open game vehicle to Rhino Post Safari Lodge for the start of your Kruger safari. Rhino Post Safari Lodge is a 16-bed lodge, set on the banks of the Mutlumuvi riverbed, within a 12,000 hectare private concession in the Kruger National Park.
The pattern of the afternoon is to head out after afternoon tea for an afternoon/evening game drive in the Kruger National Park. You return to the lodge in the early evening to freshen up before dinner is served either in the dining area or in the dry river bed by the light of the lanterns.
The following morning as the animals rise early, to hunt in the cool of the day, you take your game drive immediately after early morning tea and coffee. The drive finishes in time for a late breakfast which will be keenly appreciated after your early morning activity. You relax in your room after breakfast until it’s time to swap the tyres for your own feet as you head off to Plains Camp to enjoy a walking safari for two days. You are transferred by road to Plains Camp and settle in.
Plains Camp is the only camp specializing in walking safaris in the Kruger National Park. The concession comprises of environmentally sensitive areas with huge diversity of both fauna and flora – an ideal setting for wilderness walking safaris. Built in authentic pioneer tradition, Plains Camp has the serenity of a 19th century naturalist’s bush camp. Mahogany furniture with brass hinges and leather straps, copper taps in the bathroom and various surveying tools and Africana memorablia complete the ‘Out of Africa’ ambience. Plains camp has four comfortably furnished African explorer-style tents all en suite with overhead fans.
Walking Safaris at Plains Camp
A walking safari affords guests the ultimate, close-to-the-wild experience, and a chance to focus on the smaller bush inhabitants including birds, insects and butterflies. You can also discover the interesting worlds of trees, grasses, flowers, geology and ecology – of course, occasionally big game can be seen on walks – including rhino, buffalo and lion.
After tea, you enjoy your first walking safari followed by sundowners in the bush before dinner back at the camp.
This morning you enjoy a longer morning walk in the cool part of the day. This is followed by a hearty and long-awaited brunch! The heat of the day will be spent around the camp, enjoying the small Africana book collection or the plunge pool overlooking the plains, which is often host to zebra, buffalo, giraffe, elephant, rhino and lion. This is followed by afternoon tea and the afternoon game walk.
