Gentle Adventure: Our Favourite Slack-Packing Routes

Slack-packing trails in South Africa - Green Mountain Trail

Slack-packing trails are South Africa’s answer to backpacking, but made easy. All the beauty, none of the burden. These multi-day walks, usually two to six days, are perfect for travellers who want to experience the country on foot without hauling a 15-20 kg backpack. They neatly complement a longer South African itinerary, offering slow, scenic immersion between more conventional sightseeing.

Many of us cut our teeth on strenuous multi-day hikes in our youth, when we were still happy to  carry everything from stoves to sleeping bags. But now many of us want a greater degree of comfort and a gentler rhythm: a comfortable bed at night, a home-cooked dinner, a glass of good wine, and - most importantly - no heavy pack.

This is where slack-packing shines.

What Is Slack-Packing?

Cederberg Ridge - walking

A slack-packing trail is a multi-day walking experience where you carry nothing more than a light daypack. Your main luggage is transported for you, accommodation is arranged, and meals are prepared. Leaving you free to focus on the landscape rather than your load and aching shoulders.

Please note that sometimes the trail is only offered for private groups of 4 to 6 people or more. So great for a family party, not so good for couples. On others eg The Dolphin Trail, a couple can join a set departure.

Beyond that, no two routes are the same. Accommodation ranges from simple cottages to comfortable guesthouses; guiding styles vary from local community experts to specialist naturalists; terrain can be coastal, mountainous or riverine.

Walk Lightly: The Best Slack-Packing Trails to Add to Your Itinerary

Below are some of the trails we book: each offering its own mix of scenery, culture and “I could keep walking forever” ease.

Guiding by local guides, learning about the landscape and history, swimming in refreshing rock pools are all part of the magic.

Pondoland Trail – 4 nights

A magnificent coastal route in the northern reaches of the Wild Coast. Expect dramatic cliffs, waterfalls plunging straight into the sea, remote beaches, and warm community encounters. The walking is rewarding but not technical. It’s deal for travellers wanting wild beauty without sacrificing comfort. BUT it is very popular and gets booked up a year in advance.

 Dolphin Trail – 3 nights

This guided coastal trail traces one of the most dramatic stretches of the Garden Route, combining indigenous forest, rocky shoreline and sweeping ocean views. Your luggage is transferred for you, leaving you free to watch for dolphins and otters as you follow forest paths and sea-view boardwalks. Charming lodges bookend each day with comfort and warm hospitality.

Green Mountain Trail – 3 nights

A favourite in the Grabouw region, this 3-night trail winds through the Green Mountain Eco Route, the world’s first biodiversity wine route. Walk between vineyards, fynbos slopes and cool mountain valleys, with excellent farm hospitality and a strong focus on conservation.

Wild Coast Meander – 5 nights

A flexible 5-night (or shorter 3-night) coastal trail in the Eastern Cape, designed for private parties. Walking is generally easy - probably one of the easiest slack-packing trails - with local porters carrying your bags. Think wide beaches, quiet estuaries and the chance to pause for swims and village visits along the way.

Donkey Trail – 3 nights

A 3-night heritage trail descending into the remote Gamkaskloof – atmospherically known as Die Hel. Guided by trained community guides and accompanied by donkeys carrying supplies, it offers a glimpse into one of the most isolated valleys in South Africa. Minimum group size of six applies, but you may be able to join an existing departure.

Klein Krakadouw Trail (2 or 3 nights)

Part of the Cederberg Heritage Route, this trail explores the rugged sandstone world of the northern Cederberg with its rock formations, clear rock pools and wide mountain horizons.

This is one of four trails of the Cederberg Heritage Route. See Klein Krakadouw for a brief overview of the other trails.

Important Notes:
  1. Group Sizes & Departures
Many trails run on an exclusive-use basis for small groups. Some require a minimum of 4–6 people. So this means that it may not be possible for couples to simply join an existing departure. However others still operate a departures if only 2 people, but at a higher per-person rate.
  2. Booked as Part of a Larger Trip
We usually ONLY book slack-packing routes within a broader South African itinerary, ensuring smooth transfers, accommodation and onward travel.
  3. Trail-Only Bookings
If you wish to book only a slack-packing trail, an admin fee may apply, or we may direct you to the supplier if that’s more practical.

Frequently Asked Questions on Slackpacking

  1. How fit do I need to be for a slack-packing trail?
Most routes require reasonable walking fitness. Eg. You should be comfortable walking 10–15 km per day, sometimes up and down hills. But they won’t require technical skills. We’ll advise which trail suits your pace and interests.
  2. What should I pack for a slack-packing trip?
You’ll only carry a daypack with water, snacks, sun protection and a light layer. Your main luggage is transported ahead to each night’s accommodation.
  3. When is the best time to do these trails?
Autumn and spring offer the most stable temperatures, though coastal routes can be enjoyed year-round. Mountain and interior trails are best avoided in midsummer heat or during the winter season.

High satisfaction with Cedarberg
"We just returned from our third African safari booked with Milandi. I cannot say enough about our high satisfaction with Cedarberg and, particularly, Milandi. Milandi is efficient, highly responsive, knowledgeable, friendly, and seems ..." - Mrs Shirley Spain

"I cannot recommend Cedarberg Africa enough, and more specifically, Mari Jacobs. I knew nothing about Africa and I thought it would be a wonderful place to go for our 2-week honeymoon. A co-worker had done a similar trip and passed along Mari’s name to me. She really is excellent at what she does and, most importantly at the time, she makes everything as stress-free as possible.
