Planning a family safari can feel suspiciously like a full-time job:

  • “I want this to be perfect,  but I don’t have hours to research.”
  • “I’m worried about safety and logistics with young kids?”
  • “Where do we even start? What’s age-appropriate?”

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. You want this to be the family trip that everyone remembers. But between school timetables, work meetings and the maze of online opinions, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. That’s where we come in. Whether you’re juggling Zoom calls or school runs, we do the heavy lifting so your family can simply arrive and savour the magic without the stress.

Introducing Cedarberg Africa, family safari experts

Tiger fishing on Lower Zambezi, Chongwe River campFor over 30 years, we’ve been crafting family safaris for parents just like you. We’ve travelled with our own children to game reserves, cities, beaches and bush camps. So we know what works, what doesn’t, and which lodges genuinely welcome families.

No two families are the same. Your children’s ages, your travel rhythm, your preferred accommodation and your appetite for culture, adventure or relaxation all shape the ideal itinerary. Some families dream of long, lazy beach days; others want active teens to learn to track lions or discover a different culture.

Whether you’re planning a multi-generational celebration or your child’s very first safari, we’ll guide you to the right destinations, the right pace, and the right mix of wildlife, comfort and adventure.

“We take the pressure off so you can do the fun parts; we'll handle the nitty gritty.”

Our Family Safari Plan: Simple. Seamless. Personal.

Family Safari Holiday – What to Consider

Family safaris in Africa - walking up Big Daddy at Sossusveli in NamibiaBringing your children into the world of African wildlife is unforgettable — but choosing the right kind of safari makes all the difference. Think about:

  • Your children’s ages and attention spans
  • How happily they travel long distances (by car or air)
  • Whether you prefer easier access or remote wilderness
  • Your comfort level with malaria risk
  • The type of holiday you enjoy — active, relaxed, cultural, beach-focused
  • Whether you want to be together 24/7, or value occasional time apart
  • Whether a specialist kids’ safari programme appeals to you

Family Safaris in Africa & Malaria

Malaria exists in most African safari regions — but not all. For families with children under five, we usually recommend avoiding year-round malaria areas. Older children simply follow the same sensible precautions as adults: cover up at dusk and use good insect repellent.

South Africa is unique in Africa for its year-round malaria-free game reserves. Excellent Big Five game-viewing is on offer in:

South Africa also has regions where malaria risk is seasonally low (May–September), including the Kruger Park. See our Malaria-Free Safaris article for more details…
