It was really fun at first: the elephants were amazing, the baby zebra was adorable… But now the ranger just keeps talking and talking, your tummy is rumbling, and you need the loo now. But Mum says you can’t because you’re looking for a pride of lions which were sighted near here … wherever here is! You’re bored and you want to go home NOW!

Cue wobbly lip. Cue unhappy family.

And for something as special — and as costly — as a safari, that’s not the memory you want.

The “Tricky Age” (3–5 Years)

Choosing a lodge for this age group requires more thought. Most reserves don’t allow children under six on full game drives. It’s not an arbitrary rule: three-hour drives demand patience, stillness, and the ability to follow instructions at crucial wildlife moments.

This is the tricky window where parents feel sure their four-year-old will love a game drive! But most lodges simply can’t accommodate them safely, and with other guests in mind.

How to Make Family Safaris Work for Young Kids

Below, we highlight the sample family safaris that can be adapted for younger children. Plus the lodges that truly understand life with under-six explorers.

Child-Friendly Lodge Approaches

  • Jungle drives -  short, one-hour outings designed especially for younger kids. These focus on learning about tracks, plants, insects, and the gentle side of the bush rather than chasing big predators. They’re usually after breakfast with child-minding on hand if the parents want to do an early morning game drive.
  • Bush-based activities between drives:  from supervised nature walks to baking, crafts, spoor tracking, story time, and junior ranger programmes. This differs from lodge to lodge so we’ll discuss what’s on offer at your chosen game lodge.
  • Flexible daily rhythms — because when you’re four, a nap can be every bit as essential as spotting a giraffe.

Private Vehicles

This is often an option, especially in Southern Africa where it is usually a condition of taking younger kids. If can be on offer in South Africa but not always guaranteed. However if you take some two-bedroom family suites, these sometimes come with their own private vehicles. Chat to us!

Generally no : most lodges have a strict cut-off at six years old for safety and practical reasons. However, some offer jungle drives or child-focused alternatives, as well as child-minding services.

How long should we stay on safari with young kids?

Three nights is usually ideal. It gives enough time for gentle wildlife experiences without overwhelming little ones.

What’s the best age to take a child on safari?

Many families find ages 7–10 years is perfect, but good malaria-free lodges can make safaris enjoyable even for 3–5-year-olds, provided the experience is tailored to their needs.
