Kite-surfing in Zanzibar
Zanzibar Beach Resorts
Kite-surfing in the calmer lagoon waters of Zanzibar
Zanzibar is a great place to either learn or enjoy kite-surfing. The weather is warm and much of the east coast is protected by a coral reef so that there is a more gentle area for learning inside of the lagoon. Plus it has winds, especially in the afternoon.
It does take a few hours to learn kite-surfing. Most resorts seem to recommend 6 hours of tuition made up of 2 hours per day over 3 days. So you need to be staying in Zanzibar for at least 4 nights, and preferably more, if you want to learn.
I have it on authority that the key skill is the ability to fly the kite and not the ability to surf. So, even if you are a keen snowboarder for example, that won’t necessarily help you.
Seasonal
Kitesurfing is often a seasonal activity at the hotels, corresponding to the peak seasons and also excluding the rainy seasons (mid March to May and November). The kite schools are generally open yearly from mid June to mid September, and from mid December to mid March. Please check with your resort that the kite-school is open when you are staying.
It is still possible to rent and kitesurf in the low seasons. But lessons are available subject to instructor availability and weather conditions.
Note: We are not able to book kite-surfing independent of Zanzibar accommodation. But if you are booking your Zanzibar hotel with us, we can pre-book some lessons if you wish.
