Lake Mburo National Park: Uganda’s Compact Safari Gem

Lake Mburo National Park, zebraLake Mburo National Park, though compact, is a little biodiverse powerhouse with 350+ bird species, rolling hills, forests, swamps and zebras.

Birding includes rare delights like African finfoot and shoebill, whilst game-viewing offers Burchell’s zebra, eland, impala, Topi, waterbuck, and predators like leopard, hyena. Plus the proverbial hippo in the lake.

It’s the only place in Uganda you’ll find impala and Burchell’s zebra together.

Lake Mburo lies 4-5 hours’ drive south from Kampala. It's the ideal spot for a relaxed 1‑2‑night stop on your way to the popular mountainous rainforests ofΒ MgahingaΒ in the south-west, Bwindi or even Queen Elizabeth. But some of our guests have experienced their best game-viewing in Uganda staying here. But truth be told, you might just stay for the views (and that pool).

Lake Mburo National Park - little bee eaterAt just 370β€―kmΒ², it's Uganda’s smallest savannah park, blending rolling hills, wetlands, woodland, forest patches and rocky kopjes, all centred around the shallow Lake Mburo itself.

This is an extensive wetland system comprising five lakes. A boat trip on the lake is the best way to appreciate crocodile, hippo and the over 300 species of birds.

From Boat Cruises to Horseback Safaris – Lake Mburo Delivers

There’s a wide array of immersive safari experiences including game drives, boat cruises, guided walking safaris, horseback riding and mountain biking. All offering up close and personal wildlife views.

Stay at Mihingo Lodge: Eco-Luxury with a View

Lake Mburo National Park - sunsetFor something a little different, Mihingo Lodgeβ€”perched dramatically on an ancient rocky kopjeβ€”offers horseback safaris, mountain biking and night drives. Their infinity pool overlooks a waterhole where zebra, warthog and bushbuck wander in at sundown. It’s part eco-luxury, part safari theatre.

It’s the only lodge in Uganda offering both day and night game drivesβ€”with a real chance of leopard sightings. Plus, horseback safaris and mountain biking offer quieter, freer ways to explore. Don’t skip a bush picnic or guided walk.

Why We Love It

  • Good herds of buffalo, lots of zebra and the largest antelope in Africa, the magnificent eland.
  • Keen birders will enjoy the excellent birding on offer around the lake with 300 species. Specials might even include the African Finfoot or theΒ  iconic Shoebill stork..
  • It offers safari animals that you are unlikely to see elsewhere such as eland, topi, roan antelope and sitatunga.
  • Lake Mburo is the ideal spot to break the journey between EntebbeΒ /Kampala and the popular rainforests of Bwindi and Mgahinga in the south-west.
  • Oribi and impala are well habituated to safari vehicles as well. Or you may be lucky to spot the rare Sitatunga in the wetlands areas.
