Navigate South Africa Seamlessly with In-Car Wi-Fi Service
For years the latest “innovation” was GPS for car rental. We added this into our car rental rates at a nominal extra charge. (As it was much less than if you decided to rent one later at the car rental counter). Nice but not exactly revolutionary! And indeed those GPS devices were not always that reliable. However Europcar has introduced a much more attractive option. Data on the Go (or Wifi Route) is the name. So now this is what we are recommending for all our self drive clients in South Africa. Our car rentals come with Europcar’s ‘Data on the Go’ service, providing drivers with 1GB of daily data accessible via an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot.
- 1 GB of daily data allowance
- Up to 5 devices can connect, so that the whole family can connect if need be.
- Integrated smartphone holder for navigation (small suppement)
Again we include it automatically, as it is a much lower cost if booked by us, than if you decide to take it later at the car rental counter.
Obviously once you have Data on the Go, the need for the, frankly, clunky GPS device falls away. You can now log your smartphone on to the car’s wifi hotspot, and then use Google Maps when you wish.
They have now also added a smartphone holder into the cars which makes it even easier to use google maps for directions.
Important Note on GPS and Google Maps in South Africa
Of course there are limitations with using Google Maps as with any GPS in South Africa. We still recommend using our written directions in the remote country areas, as some of the Google Maps routes are VERY questionable when in rural areas. Especially around the Kruger Area. BUT it is a godsend in a city or town environment when you are trying to find the hotel!

So 1GB will see you through the day if using Google Maps, checking emails and looking up the odd thing on the internet. But of course streaming Netflix series may be another matter entirely! But thankfully for us, that’s for you to manage, not us.
