Want to go to the Beach?
All can agree that Mauritius makes for a great beach holiday destination. With miles of powder-white beaches, turquoise lagoons that reflect every shade of blue in the spectrum, and gentle trade winds countering the tropical heat. Whether you’re toasting a honeymoon sunrise with champagne in hand, or planning a family beach day, this island’s coastline delivers unforgettable settings.
But there’s remarkably little consensus about which are the best beaches in Mauritius as so many subjective factors come into play. Some criteria are very specific. For example, the best spot for windsurfing and kite-surfing is Le Morne in the south-west of Mauritius.
Le Morne Beach – Iconic Backdrop, Kite-surfing and Barefoot Drama
Framed by the striking Le Morne Brabant peak, this south-western beach is among the most iconic in Mauritius. Here, the scenery plays an epic supporting role in every honeymoon photo: jagged mountain silhouette, turquoise lagoon, and a sense of privacy even on sunny afternoons.
Le Morne suits couples who enjoy a sense of wild beauty with their beach stay. Conditions can be breezier and the lagoon deeper than elsewhere, making it popular with kitesurfers, while quieter pockets reward those who enjoy long walks and dramatic sunsets rather than constant swimming.
Highlights
- UNESCO-listed mountain backdrop
- Powerful sense of place and natural beauty
- Sunset views among the island’s best
- Ideal for active couples and photographers
- BUT: Windier conditions on some days

Trou aux Biches – Classic Tropical Elegance
Imagine walking into a postcard? Fine white sand, gentle lagoon, shaded stretches of coconut palms and calm waters that lap quietly at your feet. Trou aux Biches – in the north-west of Mauritius – is beloved by couples seeking classic island romance without hustle and bustle.
The sea here is consistently calm, making it one of the island’s most reliable beaches for swimming and snorkelling straight from the shore.
It’s a polished, easy beach with a timeless appeal, well suited to honeymooners who want effortless beauty and excellent swimming without drama. Its popularity reflects its quality, though it rarely feels overwhelmingly busy.
Highlights:
- Close to plenty of luxurious north coast resorts
- Calm, shallow lagoon ideal for swimming
- Excellent snorkelling close to shore
- Soft sand and classic tropical feel
- Reliable conditions year-round
- Gently lively rather than secluded

Pereybere Beach – Small but Spectacular
A boutique-feeling beach stretch just south of Grand Baie, Pereybere combines crystalline water with a laid-back vibe. The bay is perfect for a romantic swim, and staying nearby means easy access to fine dining and chic cafés for sunset cocktails.
Highlights: great swimming, close to luxe northern resorts.
Île aux Cerfs – Private Island Magic
Just offshore from the east coast of Mauritius, this is less a beach and more a private tropical playground: fine white sandbars jutting into pristine waters, beach bars for lazy lunches, options for water sports and coral-reef swims. The rocks that add to its photogenic quality also make this a good spot for snorkelling. It’s a picture of luxury and a perfect day trip on a honeymoon itinerary. Or an option for keen golfers with its championship golf course. (But don’t go there hoping for a moment of island solitude!)
You can also stay here at Le Touessrok Resort & Spa
Highlights: Catamaran cruises, snorkelling, championship golf

Belle Mare Plage – Quiet Refinement on the East Coast
Belle Mare Plage is not a beach that shouts for attention. Stretching for miles along Mauritius’s east coast , this is one of the island’s most expansive and graceful beaches where the white coral sand beach meets a wide lagoon with an unhurried atmosphere that feels effortlessly refined.
Mornings here are particularly special. Sunrise bring soft golden light and calm water, ideal for swimming or an unhurried beach walk before breakfast.
Even in peak season, Belle Mare rarely feels busy: its sense of space is one of its greatest luxuries.
The lagoon is generally excellent for swimming, paddleboarding and snorkelling, however trade winds can freshen in the afternoons at certain times of year. Evenings here are deliberately low-key, more candlelit dinners than beach bars and nightlife.
For honeymooners and couples seeking serenity, polish, and privacy over spectacle, it’s a quietly rewarding choice.
Highlights:
- One of longest and most spacious beaches
- Beautiful sunrise light and peaceful mornings
- Calm lagoon for swimming and paddleboarding
- Refined, tranquil atmosphere suited to honeymooners
- Two top golf courses
- Breezier afternoons in winter; minimal nightlife

Family-Friendly & Fun Beaches on Mauritius
While Mauritius is famed for romantic escapes, it also has brilliant beaches where kids can splash, snorkel and play.
Flic en Flac – Classic Family Sunshine Spot
One of Mauritius’s longest, softest beaches, Flic en Flac on the Mauritius West Coast offers shallow, sheltered waters thanks to its offshore coral reef. (So it’s also good for diving and snorkelling). The lagoon is perfect for safe swimming with youngsters!
The atmosphere is relaxed and sociable, with space for beach games, snorkelling, and sunset strolls. In the evenings, families gather for spectacular sunset views and casual beach dinners.
While it lacks the luxury and romance of some east-coast beaches, it excels as a flexible, enjoyable base for families. Plus the west coast is protected from the summer trade winds and tends to also be a little warmer in winter!
Highlights:
- Shallow, protected lagoon for safe swimming
- Long beach ideal for walks and play
- Amazing west-coast sunsets
- Relaxed, informal atmosphere
- Well suited to families and multi-gen trips

Mont Choisy – Gentle Waves, Plenty of Space
Stretching long and wide in the north-west, Mont Choisy Beach is beloved by families. The water stays shallow well out, making it ideal for toddlers and teens alike. As a bonus, shade-giving casuarina trees line parts of the beach for afternoon picnics.
Perfect for: Picnics, casual beach days and little ones learning to swim.
Blue Bay – Snorkel Wonderland
Just south of Mahebourg in the South-east of Mauritius, this area includes the Blue Bay Marine Park: a highlight for families who want to introduce kids to snorkelling. It is celebrated for the unbelievably vibrant colour of the water, alive with colourful fish and coral gardens, ideal for a calm, educational dip in the shallows.
Paradis is probably the best beach in the south.
Perfect for: Snorkelling with kids, educational eco experiences, gentle waters.
More Beaches Worth a Look
These beaches offer unique charms beyond the classic love-nest beaches:
- Tamarin Beach: A lively west-coast favourite with dolphin trips and surf vibes for older kids and teens.
- La Cuvette Beach: A small, quieter beach near Grand Baie: perfect for a peaceful beach experience.
- St-Felix & Poste Lafayette: Rugged, scenic beaches on the south/east coast for adventurous explorers (however swimming conditions do vary)
Best time to visit Mauritius (or the Seychelles for that matter…)
The islands of Mauritius, Seychelles, Madagascar are generally year-round beach holiday destinations as they are all sub-tropical or tropical islands so coastal temperatures remain fairly steady.
But what’s the best time to visit Mauritius? Sun-worshippers should take note that cyclones often hit from mid-January to mid-March, so this time is best avoided. The risk of cyclones is far less in the Seychelles as it is closer to the equator.
The best time to flop on the beaches of Mauritius is probably from mid-September to mid-December or mid-March to May. It is a sub-tropical rather than tropical climate so there is a distinct variation between summer and winter. High summer can be extremely hot, up to 38°C and mid-winter temperatures (June-July) will tend to hover around 24-27°C depending on the coast, dropping to 16°C at night.
