Tena Tena Camp is a renowned safari camp in the South Luangwa National Park of Zambia. It has a stunning location on a remote wooded bend of the Luangwa River within the Nsefu concession in the north of the park. The Nsefu concession is one of the most productive and exclusive areas of the South Luangwa. Tena Tena means “temporary home” and homely feel sums up the camp’s ambience mixed with a twist of luxury and comfort.

A passionate and experienced team runs Tena Tena. The camp is small with a maximum of 10 guests yet it is also spaciously laid out which ensures excellent privacy with every room designed to both blend into its natural setting and offer the best view over a magnificent stretch of the Luangwa River where the hippos wallow.

Accommodation

Tena Tena is sandwiched between the river and a lagoon system and is a magnet for wildlife and you do not need to go far for some incredible sightings. The camp nestles under a magnificent grove of mahogany trees which shades six large custom-made tents (under thatch) with massive picture windows. Each is positioned to maximize privacy with private verandas offering stunning river views. An en suite open air bathroom is designed to copy nature with curved walls around the trees and simple subtle colours. Tena Tena is run entirely by solar power so the rooms have electricity throughout the day and night.

The central areas at Tena Tena, with thatched dining room and bar, are moulded around a large termite mound and mahogany tree. Here there is space to relax and unwind whilst reflecting on the day's safari and watching the elephants, hippo and antelope on the river banks. After an exhilarating day on safari and perhaps a well deserved afternoon siesta, you sit down to a beautiful dinner on the banks of the Luangwa, enjoying the stars and sounds of the African night.

Nearby there is a spectacular lagoon, Buca Buca, where a whole morning can be spent quietly sitting while the game comes down to feed and drink. Being remote and so small, you have these scenes to yourselves, as there are no other camps in the whole area.

Game Viewing

Game viewing takes place on foot or on day and night game drives. As with other Robin Pope Safari camps, they have a guide to guest ratio of 1:4 allowing you to choose what you wish to do at any one time. You don’t all have to do the same thing!

Tena Tena has a 1½ hour transfer time from Mfuwe Airport, which partially takes the form of a game drive. Many guests preface their stay at Tena Tena with a night or two at Nkwali Camp.
