Sunbird Ku Chawe Hotel is reached by a narrow picturesque road which winds up to the top of the Zomba plateau in Southern Malawi. Nestled on the edge of the plateau, Ku Chawe Hotel is a comfortable, fairly large, mountain hotel. However it’s brimming with charm and character - the log fire roars all year round and birdsong fills the well-established gardens. From the hotel terrace, there are stunning far-reaching views across the African Rift Valley.
The hotel has 40 en suite rooms with a mix of standard, deluxe and superior rooms each with TV and telephone. The lodge also has a swimming pool and Wifi. The deluxe and superior rooms have fireplaces which is welcome on those chilly winter evenings. Some of the rooms are inter-leading and families are welcome at the Sunbird Ku Chawe Hotel.
The tranquil forest reserve on the Zomba Plateau has a unique high tropical micro-climate. The high altitude means welcoming lower temperatures than in the valley below. There’s plenty of opportunity for walking, horse riding and fly-fishing. Enjoy some pretty trails to waterfalls and the circular drive around the plateau. Mountain bikes can be hired from Ku Chawe Hotel. The old town of Zomba with its markets is 20 minutes away at the base of the plateau.
The potato trail is a one hour trail from the hotel down to the town - this is the track used by the local villagers to take their fruit and vegetables to the Zomba market. The Nawimbe peak hike is a one hour trail which offers magnificent views and panoramas. The trek to Williams Falls is about 2 hours and along the way you will see a range of flora such as lilies, aloes, gladioli and the ancient cycads and fern trees.
Note: Please remember that it can be very cold on the Zomba Plateau in June/July so bring plenty of warm clothes and book a room with a fireplace. Of course this also means that if you’re travelling in summer, the Sunbird Ku Chawe Hotel will offer some welcome relief from the heat!
