Steenberg Hotel & Spa is a gracious boutique hotel in Constantia on the outskirts of Cape Town. It offers 24 elegant air-conditioned rooms built around an exquisite Cape Dutch Manor House dating from 1682. The five star Steenberg Hotel aims to combine three key elements in one hotel - Food and Wine, Spa and Golf - and it certainly succeeds in doing this.

Accommodation

In the Manor House at Steenberg, rooms are furnished with antiques and sympathetic décor, some with their own lounges. In contrast the Premier rooms are more contemporary with open plan bathrooms and romantic free standing baths. Rooms in other buildings have a modern have classical decor. All have en-suite bathroom with bath and shower, air-conditioning, satellite TV, telephone, mini-bar, and tea/coffee making facilities.

The luxurious four Heritage Suites in the old Jonkershuis, each with one or two bedrooms, offer some of the most luxurious accommodation in Cape Town. These offer the ultimate in stylish living whilst on holiday.

Facilities at Steenberg

The massive grounds of Steenberg Hotel are wonderful to explore either on foot or by mountain bike. There's a large swimming pool with adjacent pool bar, and a very popular Gingko Spa offering a full range massage and beauty treatments. Surrounded by its own pristine vineyards and nestling at the foot of the mountains, Steenberg Hotel combines proximity to the sights of the Cape Peninsula with a tranquil environment.

Wine & Dining

Steenberg's wines are gaining great acclaim and you can visit the Steenberg Winery for a complimentary wine-tasting. Steenberg's restaurant, Catharinas, has won awards for its sophisticated, contemporary South African cuisine created by Executive Chef Garth Almazan. It offers a warm, sophisticated ambience with the accent on beautiful wood, soft lighting, and chic table appointments. All meals can be taken outside on the terrace in good weather. The luxurious, leather clad Cigar Bar offer a selection of delicious cocktails and cigars.

Children are very welcome at Steenberg Hotel with plenty of space for children and their parents to explore. There are two family suites with two bedrooms/one bathroom.

Activities

Though the Steenberg and Constantia are 20-25 minutes from the heart of the city, Steenberg Hotel is actually very well-situated for enjoying all the sights of Cape Town. Kirstenbosch Botanical gardens are only 10 minutes away and the various wine estates of the Constantia valley are on your doorstep. The popular scenic drive around Cape Point and Chapmans Peak is much more easily accessed from Constantia than from the city centre. Ideally we recommend either taking a rental car or a private guide but complimentary transfers to nearby shops & restaurants are available.

Golf Facilities

Surrounded by vineyards, Steenberg's parkland 18 hole golf course lies in the verdant Constantia valley with mountain and forest views. Designed by Peter Matkovich, you enjoy some testing and varied golf with tee boxes amongst the vines, much use of water, and natural sand banks in the heathland. The Steenberg golf course offers special rates for Steenberg hotel guests.

Steenberg Hotel & Spa Review by Mari Jacobs

I love the Cape winelands and having not been to Steenberg for a few years I wanted to revisit and rekindle my love for the Constantia wine area.

Steenberg Farm consists of the 24 room, 5-Star Steenberg Hotel & Spa, an 18-hole golf course, and 2 restaurants. Choose from relaxed dining at Tryn or popular bistro-style fare and tapas at Bistro Sixteen82 where you can also enjoy the stunning wines at the wine tasting venue. Steenberg Farm has a rich history (Catharina the owner loved and lost 5 men, some of which died brave or unexpected deaths!), and beautiful wines. I can recommend the award-winning Sauvignon Blanc and for red wine the flagship Catharina’s! (A standard tasting is included in the hotel stay’s – excluding the flagship Catharina’s).

The staff at Steenberg are friendly and go out of their way to ensure you have the most enjoyable stay (Special mention to and Ian our wine tasting ambassador and Tracey the guest experience manager at the hotel). Steenberg’s entry-level rooms are absolutely beautiful, (I recommend Room 5 in the corner), and although we were booked into Superior rooms. We had been treated to an upgrade to a modern and open plan Premier room, which either overlooks the golf course or the vineyards and mountains. The rooms in the Manor House (a heritage site) are also spacious, however, I prefer the more modern feeling of reception in the original Cape Dutch “Jonkershuis”. The suites are modern and spacious, but if you are looking for an exclusive stay with multi-generational family members, look no further than the villas at Steenberg. The villas can be booked separately, or combined, and have their own, individual private pools.

Great for social distancing, with the option of receiving some restaurant treats from the chefs, in-room dining, or leisurely family meals at the pool area (weather permitting). Both dinner and breakfast at Tryn Restaurant were a gastronomic affair! Thank you to Neilen for joining me for breakfast and showing me around!

Loved not only by golfers and wine lovers alike, Steenberg Hotel and Spa has now opened their restaurant Tryn Restaurant to be enjoyed by the public. Families with children happily playing on the grass set the mood of “feeling at home”, and it makes perfect sense to enjoy the wonderful scenery and setting at Tryn.

As this is woman’s month, I would like to mention all the woman at Steenberg in Management positions - Elunda Basson, the Cellermaster, (she popped in on our dinner), Chef Kerry Kilpin and Catherine Schulze, the Hotel& Spa General Manager. Well done ladies!

Steenberg also has some unique art pieces all around the farm. Talks of opening the farm to incorporate the Norval Institute (that borders the farm) and extending the Spa, are on the cards for the near future!

There is so much to do in the area - we went for winetasting at Beau Constantia and had lunch at Simons on the Groot Constantia wine estate. I loved Steenberg, definitely one of my favorites in Cape Town and we will be back sooner than you think!
