Serra Cafema Camp is an exclusive desert getaway on the banks of the beautiful Kunene River in the remote north-western section of the Kaokoland (close to the Skeleton Coast Hoanib Camp, its more famous sister). This has to be one of the most remote camps in Africa! Serra Cafema is situated under huge shady Ana trees. The Kunene is the only permanent source of water in this desert area and has its own little eco-system with lush river vegetation giving way to rugged mountains and sand dunes as you move away from the river. You fall asleep to the sound of rushing water, while by day you explore one of the driest deserts in the world.
Eight luxurious thatch, timber and canvas tented suites offer total privacy and stunning river views. All are decorated in a soft contemporary style in muted safari colours and have a sitting area and en suite bathrooms. Elevated walkways lead to the sumptuous living area with spacious open air sitting and dining areas, a well-stocked bar and swimming pool. The dining room and pool look out over the Kunene River.
Despite Serra Cafema's luxury, the reason people actually come here is to experience and explore one of the most remote desert landscapes in Africa. Serra Cafema Camp has a veritable array of river and desert activities to choose from. Activities include excursions into the breathtaking Hartmann's Valley in 4x4 vehicles in search of springbok, ostrich and gemsbok amongst other wildlife; traversing the sand dunes on quad bikes; walking along the valley or to the river's waterfalls, as well as boat trips on the Kunene river (water levels permitting). The quad bikes are carefully guided and enable you to tread lightly on the desert dunes.
In this isolated region, the Himba people continue their nomadic, traditional way of life and when in the area, you have the opportunity to learn about their lifestyle and traditions at close quarters. This area is also a bird-watcher's paradise and if you're lucky you might even see the ferocious Kunene crocodiles basking on a sandy river bank.
Serra Cafema Camp is accessible by a fairly long light aircraft charter taking 3 hours from Windhoek, less if coming from Damaraland followed by a scenic road transfer through the incredible Hartmans Valley, which is an experience in itself.
