Serengeti Pioneer Camp by Elewana

Overview

Serengeti Pioneer Camp is located in the Central to Southern Serengeti within the Moru Kopjes area, carefully positioned to offer superlative access to the savanna for the annual Migration and to spot the ‘Big Five’. There are sweeping views overlooking the Moru Kopjes, Lake Magadi and the seemingly endless plains of the Serengeti.

Each of Elewana Collection’s camps and lodges has its own individual style and feel. Serengeti Pioneer Camp continues in this tradition by paying homage to the mobile camps of the 1920’s, a time when any African safari was a real journey into the unknown. Serengeti Pioneer Camp’s ‘zero footprint’ and empathy with nature combine to make this camp a distinctive and extremely individual place. The drama and beauty of the Serengeti National Park is indeed awe inspiring.

This is a camp of ten tented suites, all of which have en suite facilities, including a flush toilet, vanity basin, and solar power hot showers. The tent interiors evoke the very best of an era long-gone. There is also a family tent which has two identical bedrooms, both en suite, under one canvas roof.

There is a stylish dining tent for both breakfast and dinner, whilst lunch is taken either in camp or out in the bush during an enthralling day in the Serengeti. And there's a swimming pool to cool off during the warm days when you are in between game drives.

But one of the most charming things about this camp is the elevated lounge, bar and viewing deck which offers bird's eye panoramic views over the Serengeti.

Serengeti Pioneer Camp activities

For much of the year here you will also be able to witness the ceaseless movements of big game animals as they roam across the African plains. The central area of the Serengeti remains a strong game-viewing area, with lots of resident game, even as the migration heads west and then northwards.

The combination of both Serengeti Pioneer Camp and Serengeti Migration Camp to the north will make it possible for you to cover over 90% of the Serengeti from both of these camps, thus maximising your game-viewing opportunities and increasing game-viewing time.

Review of Elewana Serengeti Pioneer camp by Kate

I really liked the ambience of Pioneer camp with its unashamed nod to the era of 1920’s mobile safaris in East Africa. It has an absolutely stunning setting and makes the most of it with its elevated lounge/bar and viewing deck.

The food at lunch was very good, tasty and not too overly-formal in presentation. It bodes well for dinner.

Personally I am not such a fan of colonial-styled camps anymore but I think that it is still an attractive design and very popular with many people. I feel that they could tone it down a notch in the bedrooms, for example. (But that's nit-picking)

Positives

  • Superb setting
  • Loved the way that the sitting area/bar was making the most of the views with its elevated position
  • Stylish colonial dining mess tent with very good food
  • Attractive tents
  • Small thing - stylish guest loos on arrival with the most interesting basin I encountered J
