Overview
Schoone Oordt Country House is a charming country hotel in the historic town of Swellendam, between Hermanus and the Route 62, which has been lovingly restored by Richard and Alison Walker.
It offers 11 luxury bedrooms in the lush gardens as well as an intimate Conservatory restaurant and a sparkling saltwater pool. This is all combined with a passion for people, family, food, wine and the environment. The emphasis at Schoone Oordt is on unpretentious luxury, elegance, quality and attention to detail.
Accommodation
There are eight luxury suites in the gardens, as well as a quaint, private family cottage, a romantic honeymoon hideaway sheltered by aged oak trees and a newly built larger family suite. Each room has every modern convenience whilst restored antiques retain the Victorian feel of the Manor House. All luxury suites are equipped with satellite TV, tea/coffee facilities, minibar, fireplace, air-conditioning, underfloor heating in the bathroom, bathrobes and full en suite bathroom with double basins, large modern open shower and a traditional ball and claw bath. They also have their own private patio. The Family cottage is very charming with a main bedroom en suite downstairs and a loft area for children. The sunny and airy Family Suite is a newly built, large unit ideal for children of all ages and can accommodate families of up to six guests. It has a large open plan main bedroom and a separate bedroom with two purpose built bunk beds. For even more space, there is a lovely outside patio overlooking the gardens and pool. The Honeymoon suite is unashamedly romantic with its carved four poster bed, spacious bathroom and secluded position.
The Manor House at Schoone Oordt boasts the most exquisite light and airy conservatory, cosy fire-lit bar and lounge, dining room and a country kitchen.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at the Conservatory, its fine dining restaurant using organic, free-range fresh produce sourced as locally and as ethically as possible. Dinners are not served out of season (May to September) but there is a choice of three restaurants within easy walking distance. Delectable wines are sourced from the surrounding wine areas of Robertson and Hermanus.
Activities in and around Swellendam
Swellendam and the nearby Route 62 offers an abundance of activities. Hiking, horse-trails, bike-trails in Marloth Nature Reserve well as visits to the nearby Bontebok Nature Reserve are a must. A short journey over the Tradouw's Pass brings you to Barrydale where you can enjoy a quad bike trip in the morning followed by a tapas lunch and wine-tasting.
Alternatively you can head to the nearby Robertson Valley to meander along the Robertson Wine Route. Along with a nine-hole golf course, quaint coffee shops, the renowned Drostdy museum, berry-picking, lavender-picking, good restaurants and a variety of galleries and studios to visit, Swellendam spoils its visitors for choice. Further afield you can enjoy whale-watching at Hermanus...

Luxury Room
The eight Luxury Rooms are all separate from the Manor House with their own private entrances and patios. They are positioned around fragrant rose gardens, peaceful tinkling fountains and wild landscaped shrubbery. There is a single sofa bed, ideal for a child of up to 10yrs of age and space for a cot (pre-booked) in each room.
Honeymoon Suite
The Honeymoon Suite is unashamedly romantic and private with its large hearth, exquisitely carved four-poster bed and oversized bathroom. It is tucked away on the edge of a shady forest with the Koornlands River gurgling along at its perimeter.
Family Cottage
The Family Cottage is at the top end of the property, private, cosy and set apart from other guests. It has 2 extended length single beds in an upstairs loft area accessible by stairs and an extended length king bed for parents downstairs. This room is perfect for families with children aged between 3 and 13. Under 3, the steps may be difficult and over 13... teenagers like more privacy. Note, that we don't hold to this age range. It is ultimately our guests' choice.
Family Suite
The Family Suite is a spacious two-bedroom suite that sleeps two adults in an over-sized king bed and up to four children in beautiful sturdy bunk beds, with even enough room for a cot (pre-booked). It has a private patio area overlooking the circular lawn and pool area. This room is perfect for families of any age.
