Mwagusi Safari Camp

Deep in Ruaha National Park, on the banks of the Mwagusi Sand River, this traditional 11 banda safari camp is owned by Chris Fox, born and bred locally. It affords just the right balance between comfort and wild adventure; traditional bandas (housing the tented sleeping quarters) have private balconies, en suite bathrooms and hot showers. Each banda is located on the banks of the Mwagusi River (dry for a large part of the year).
Started back in 1987 as a fly-camp, Mwagusi Safari Camp has evolved into something bursting with character and full of individual touches. Much use is made of organic materials such as grass, timber and stone. There is no air-con and no swimming pool. The whole camp runs on solar power, except that the generator is used twice a day to pump water.
The food is fresh and delectable and whenever possible they serve dinner outside. This is a truly magical experience - frequently sited in the sand river - with scores of kerosene lanterns, a camp fire and a buffet presented on a charcoal-laden sand bolster. You can elect to have breakfast in camp or out in the bush, in which case you will probably leave camp a little earlier.
All guides are trained in-house, which helps ensure the excellent standard of guiding on offer. The area is paradise for elephant. Game drives rarely encounter other vehicles and the camp is a great base for walking. In addition to a short morning "bird walk", 3 hour bush walks are offered at a supplement, with a minimum age of 16. In high season it is advisable to book these in advance as a TANAPA ranger has to accompany the walk.
