Makweti Safari Lodge is a luxurious private game lodge in the pristine malaria-free Welgevonden Private Game Reserve. The Welgevonden Reserve is situated in the heart of the Waterberg Mountains, only three hours drive from Johannesburg.
Makweti offers Big 5 game-viewing including the largest number of white rhino on a private reserve and over 300 bird species. Situated over 1500m above sea level, the lodge overlooks a dramatic gorge surrounded by the rolling grassland of the beautiful Waterberg. With only six chalets, it offers a very personal and exclusive safari experience in South Africa. Activities include morning and afternoon 4x4 game drives in the company of an experienced ranger, as well as game walks.
Each bijoux stone and thatch chalet has a Victorian bathtub, large indoor and outdoor showers, fireplace and lovely viewing deck with breath-taking views of the bushveld below. Some of the chalets are accessed by a rope bridge which adds to the sense of being in wild Africa, and some have their own private plunge pools.
The main lodge reflects its African heritage with antique artefacts and hand-beaded fabrics. Candle-lit dinners are served in the romantic dining room, on the deck or in the starlit boma. Other facilities at Makweti Safari Lodge include a charming rock swimming pool, a relaxing outdoor tsala, library, bar, lounge and expansive teak sundeck.
Makweti Safari Lodge is easily accessible by road from Johannesburg. It takes approx 3 hours to the main gate where you park your car and meet your ranger for your onward transfer to the lodge (approx 30 mins). Alternatively you can fly by private charter straight into the reserve (35 minutes flight).
