Lion Sands Tinga Lodge is one of two sister lodges which lie adjacent to each other in a 500 hectare private concession within the southern part of the Kruger National Park. Tinga Lodge offers unparalleled luxury. It is tucked away on magnificent private land with 35km of prime river frontage allowing you to view a vast array of wildlife and bird species.
Here you can go exploring off-road and follow the footsteps of the leopard, track down a herd of elephant or simply wait for them to come to you.
Tinga Lodge is part of the Lion Sands group. Lion Sands has land which straddles the Sabie River. In practical terms this means that you can enjoy game-viewing within the private concession of the Kruger. But also you can enjoy game-viewing in the Sabi Sands as well by way of a private road. The Lions Sands safari philosophy is to offer an informative and holistic safari experience, ensuring that all spheres of the eco-system, from the smallest insects to the mighty African elephant are viewed as a whole.
Tinga Lodge has nine private suites with their own private plunge pools. Tinga exudes the atmosphere of a classic safari lodge. The thatched cathedral-like entrance leads through to the colonial comfort of the lounge, which opens onto the massive wooden deck overlooking the Sabie River. Built around an enormous Jackalberry tree which is reputed to be over 200 years old, the deck affords magnificent views of the Sabie River, and regular sightings of the resident wildlife, including the Big Five. Each suite is equipped with air-conditioning, ceiling fan, mosquito net, full bathroom with shower, safe, minibar and telephone. Thereâs wifi available (in selected public areas only).
The lodge is well situated to enjoy the direct flights into nearby Skukuza Airport (only 15 mins drive away) so that you can fly almost directly to these lodges. Being in a private concession,  Tinga Lodge have the right to traverse the entire Kruger National Park thereby allowing unlimited game viewing in the world's most famous national park. But the game-viewing is good enought that you tend to stick to the private concession. Morning and afternoon 4x4 open game drives are on offer along with night drives in the park, all conducted by experienced rangers.
Hi'Nkweni Villa - is an exclusive use two bedroom villa of 220 sqm, ideal for families or friends. It can accommodate up to six people and comes with its own . It comprises bedrooms, lounge, dining area and deck with private plunge pool.
Nearby is the Tinyeleti Treehouse, one of the hallmarks of Lion Sands lodges. Tinyeleti translates as âMany starsâ - an apt description for this luxurious Star Bed. Enjoy your choice of tapas or a full meal, and then settle in with a cocktail as the animals come to drink at sunset. The large 50 sqm deck can accommodate 4 people, so your children are welcome. They provide you with a torch, and even though there is no electricity, you will find a few bars of cellphone signal. Relax to the sound of the flowing waters of the Sabie River as well as sounds of the Bush with night predators and birds chiming in.
Tinga welcomes families. It accepts children from 6 years and upwards, who can share with their parents (until they are 15 years old). There is also a two bedroom family villa, Hi'Nkweni Villa. Meal times bring you together as a family around the dining table, boma fire or perhaps even breakfast in the bush. Picky eaters are well-catered for.
Children over six join the adult game drive but they try to put families together (if they dont have their private vehicle). Activities are flexible and include animal âspoorâ tracking, Bug CSI, pool games and treasure hunts. Throw in to cookie baking, beading necklaces, pizza-making and star-gazing and you'll see that there is lots to amuse all ages of children.
The Greater Kruger Park is a seasonal malarial area, with a lower risk during the dry season from May to August.
Lion Sands Narina Lodge was THE find of the safari as I had always wondered about the game-viewing in this Kruger Park concession. I stayed at Narina and also visited Tinga Lodge.
I preferred Narina Lodge because its the lighter, more romantic décor, but both were really super in style and ambience, each with a stunning setting on the Sabie river.
As the game-viewing was pretty good in their own concession, my guide said that they very rarely needed to go out into the open roads of the Kruger. Thus their game vehicles were completely open to the sides. We enjoy a stunning encounter with a leopard conserving its prey in a tree. However they now have the flexibility to be able to go into the Sabi Sands (via a private âgateâ) if there is a particularly good sighting. We did this just to see a pack of wild dogs which was just within the Sabi sands.
