Kicheche Bush Camp is a classic luxury tented camp in a stunning, peaceful location in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy north of the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. Only five lodges have traversing rights over this conservancy, ensuring a really exclusive safari experience in the Masai Mara - a rare find! The camp is located in a prime wildlife area and game viewing starts right from the camp itself. Kicheche Bush Camp is also well-sited for experiencing the wildebeest migration over the Mara river.
There are just 6 spacious tents at Kicheche Bush Camp, each equipped with twin or double beds, bedside tables and rugs. One room can be converted into a triple on request. Bathrooms are en suite and come equipped with a dresser, flush toilet and a traditional hot-water bucket shower. Solar power provides tent lighting day and night. There are comfortable chairs on your veranda overlooking the plains. There is a spacious and well furnished lounge and dining tent, although meals are enjoyed alfresco whenever the weather is conducive (which is often!)
The views from Kicheche Bush Camp are stupendous, and there's a real feeling of exclusive and authentic simplicity. The camp is unfenced, and it's by no means unknown for the predators to corner their prey within the camp confines - this is not a camp for those who want their safari experience sanitised!
The Olare Motorogi Conservancy offers an excellent game-viewing experience without the crowds; there are 30,000 acres of rolling grassland, hills, escarpment and plains. Traditional morning and afternoon game drives are on offer, as well as full day game viewing in the Masai Mara Reserve itself, especially popular during the migration time when you'll want to witness one of the fabled river crossings (never guaranteed!). In keeping with all the Kicheche camps photographers are particularly well catered for; the vehicles are open-sided with open roofs. Cameras can be rested on the roof, with beanbags supplied, or on the armrests, to which can be mounted simple platforms for larger lenses. For complete photographic flexibility you can take a vehicle on an exclusive use basis for an additional daily fee.
Walks are a highlight at Kicheche Bush Camp, and for the adventurous there's also the possibility of spending a night in their fly-camp, available at a supplement. It's about a 5km or 3 hour walk to the fly-camp and the same back the next morning, accompanied by a senior guide and an armed ranger.. The fly-camp itself is simple but comfortable, with 2 person dome tents equipped with camp beds, bedrolls, chairs and a washstand. Basic bathroom facilities are available (long drop toilet and bush shower) and a lightweight mess shelter is used in the event of rain.
A direct transfer from Ol Kiombo airstrip takes around 45 minutes, but the transfer is often turned into a game viewing opportunity, especially if you've just flown in from Nairobi.
