Katavi Wildlife Camp

Katavi Wildlife Camp is set amongst the trees fringing the Katisunga plains.  From a good vantage point, either your tent’s veranda or the upper viewing lounge of the camp, you can see the predators watching the plains game during the day.  Then later in the evening, you can experience the excitement of the predators hunting their dinner as the game moves back towards the trees.

When to visit

Katavi Wildlife Camp has a dry period from June through to the end of October. As the park dries the animals concentrate into smaller and smaller areas, making for the spectacularly large herds.  From November to February the park turns green and lush with the coming of the rains, but still has excellent game viewing and better bird populations.

The camp is open from the beginning of June through to the end of February. The main reason for closing at this time is that the black cotton soil is very challenging for driving when wet and this makes getting about very difficult and somewhat unpleasant.

Accommodation

Katavi Wildlife Camp has six large Meru-style tents overlooking the plain, four double tents and two twin tents, and all with a safe. Each tent is built on a raised wooden platform and has a traditionally thatched roof to give shade from the midday sun. Every tent is en-suite and has a large veranda complete with hammock and chairs.

For your comfort and safety after dark you will be escorted to and from your tent by askari, the local word for guards. After all there are wild animals about.

Dining and Bar

The camp is located where the Katuma river drains the Katisunga plain. The two-storey main banda is located to maximise viewing of the daily movements of game between grazing and drinking from the Katuma river. Downstairs consists of a bar, sitting areas with comfortable armchairs, and a cosy dining area at the front of the banda overlooking the Katisunga plains.

Upstairs is a sitting area where you can relax from the heat of the day. This has far-reaching views overlooking the plains. There is a small selection of books and magazines to browse.

Just out the front is our fire-pit, where you can have a pre-dinner drink and swap stories from the day’s safari.
