The malaria-free Big 5 private game reserve of Kariega is set in the pristine wilderness of the Kariega River Valley, It is bordered by the picturesque Kariega and Bushmans Rivers. Covering 10,000ha of beautiful and diverse bushveld, Kariega offers abundant game. This includes lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, hippo, hyena, giraffe, zebra and numerous antelope species.

As well as morning and evening open vehicle game drives with experienced rangers, Kariega offers bush walks close to abundant plains game. And a range of diverse activities including river cruises on the delightful African Queen, kayaking, fly-fishing and birding. The birdlife along the river banks is excellent with martial and crowned eagles often soaring above you. And the plantiff cry of the fish eagle is often heard. Or you can simply relax by the pool and do absolutely nothing…

Accommodation

Kariega Ukhozi Lodge is a luxury African bush lodge built around a stone homestead. After a fire, it has recently been completely rebuilt. Ukhozi, meaning ‘place of eagles’ is an apt name for the lodge. As the 10 spacious, air-conditioned luxurious suites each have dramatic bird’s eye views over the bushveld and the Kariega river below. Each of the spacious wooden chalets has its own deck with private plunge pool and bathroom with bath and shower. Other facilities include air-conditioning, heating, king-sized bed and tea/coffee facilities.

The main lodge is built around a courtyard campfire which is a great venue for drinks following an evening game drive. There’s a swimming pool to enjoy during the warmer hours of the day between game drives.
