Isandlwana Lodge, in the Natal Battlefields of South Africa, is perched high against the iNyoni Rock in an unforgettable setting overlooking the Isandlwana battlefield. The lodge is stylish, romantic and thought-provoking. It was on this very rock that the Zulu commander stood to direct the battle of Isandlwana on 22 Jan 1879.

Isandlwana Lodge consists of an extremely spacious open plan sitting room and dining area with a charming upstairs library full of interesting books and battlefields memorabilia. Dinner is served in the candlelit dining room by two Zulu chefs. An inviting swimming pool is built among the rocks. The twelve stylish and contemporary rooms have private balconies, ideal for drinking in the stunning views over the valley amphitheatre as the sun sets. It is one of the few places remaining where one can watch the village come to life in the morning and close down at the end of the day. A glimpse of real rural Africa…

Battlefield & other tours at Isandlwana Lodge

Rob Gerrard, renowned military historian at Isandlwana Lodge, or one of his associates, take you on battlefield tours to both Isandlwana and nearby Rorke's Drift which bring the conflict and the human drama to life. We recommend that you stay at least two nights so that you can experience both of these tours. (Tours to other nearby Anglo-Zulu and Anglo-Boer sites are also available by prior arrangement if you wish to stay longer.) In fact, time permitting, we strongly recommend a 3 night stay as the tours are emotionally charged and so quite tiring to complete in one day. (On a 3 night stay, you would do Isandlwana battlefields tour in the morning of your first full day and then the drama of Rorke's Drift in the afternoon of the next day).

Indeed Isandlwana Lodge doesn’t just offer battlefield tours. Birding tours, morning horse-riding trails, visits to a nearby local village and guided hiking are also all on offer. The Zulu village safari is a walking tour led by a trained guide from the local community, who takes you to a typical homestead, the church, school or clinic (whatever your interests) and always to visit a Sangoma (a Zulu diviner).

Fascinating full day cultural & photographic tours are offered to explore some of the more remote areas of Zululand as well as some of its most historic sites. There are over 300 species of birds which may be seen in the region of Isandlwana during the year.   In the immediate area of the lodge, there are over 70 species.
