It has been said that there could be life on Mars, and you may well believe it if you see Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp. Forming the northern half of the great Namib Desert, the Skeleton Coast earned its fearful name from wary seafarers who sailed the barren coastline on the spice route. And while you may indeed encounter skeletons of all descriptions: ships, elephants, whales and tiny lizards, this vast and uncharted territory is home to many fascinating creatures and plants which are very much alive. Even more fascinating is the landscape with its bizarre juxtaposition of sand and sea, and life and death. Inland lies the Kaokoland, a land of mountains, vast plains, and dry riverbeds.

Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp lies on the transient Hoanib River. Just eight twin-bedded tents including one family unit with en-suite bathrooms look out over rugged scenery.

Activities

The area is explored by vehicle, on foot and in the air (weather permitting) with game drives discovering the wealth of desert-adapted life: elephant, giraffe and antelope as well as lion, leopard and cheetah. You can unravel the enigmatic history of the original Strandlopers (‘beachcombers’), their stone circles lying in hidden valleys, follow the great herds and savour landscapes that unfold untouched for hundreds of kilometres.

Hoanib Skeleton Coast is a joint venture with the neighbouring Community-based Conservancies of Anabeb, Torra and Sesfontein.
