Governors' Camp is located in the 'Musiara Triangle', the celebrated location of the filming of 'Big Cat Diaries'. This is the heart of the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, close to the traditional wildebeest crossing areas of the Mara River. It is surrounded by classic savanna plains dotted by acacia trees, home to large herds of elephant, buffalo and of course the migrating wildebeest and buffalo which arrive and stay between July and October.
The setting is magical, nestling in the forest along the winding banks of the Mara River. Almost a century ago it was reserved exclusively for Kenya's colonial Governors and their royal visitors. However now it is open for all to appreciate. The waters of the Mara River teem with birdlife, hippo and crocodiles
The entire camp is under canvas with some of the 37 tents lining the riverbank while others have views across the sweeping plains. All are big and bright allowing in lots of natural light with en-suite bathrooms offering hot showers and flush loos, and a private veranda. There is complimentary wifi in the tents.
All the main areas of Governors' Camp are also under canvas with both a bar tent and dining tent. Both breakfast and lunch are buffet style served on the shady riverbank with views across the Mara's plains. The cuisine at the camp is exceptional. Evenings are devoted to cocktails around the campfire and dinner by candlelight.
Governors' Camp is offers morning and afternoon game drives each day with experienced and well-trained guides. Being so close to the Mara River, Governors' Camp is a great place to base yourself for the migration season. Morning game walks followed by a bush breakfast or afternoon game walks followed by sundowners are also on offer (on a private concession outside the national park) and come highly recommended. Governors' Camp is also well-positioned for enjoying a sunrise hot air ballooning experience (offered at a supplement). This is a truly spectacular way of seeing the wildlife of the Mara.
