Overview

  • Idyllic setting overlooking the Nubib mountains
  • Perfect for horse-riding enthusiasts
  • Great base for exploring Sossusvlei and the towering dunes

You'll find it hard to find a more idyllic setting than the Desert Homestead with views of the distant Nubib Mountains, purple in the morning sunlight. It lies south of Sesriem, the gate into the Sossusvlei dunes of the Namib Naukluft National Park and so makes an excellent base for exploring both Sossusvlei and the rest of the Namib Desert. Desert Homestead is also known in particular for it's horse-riding with morning and sunset horse safaris for keen riders as a highlight on your Namibian holiday.

The main building at Desert Homestead is a restored farmhouse with dining area and sitting room. However, meals are usually served on the covered stoep (veranda) enjoying the view of Nubib Mountains. Desert Homestead's cooking is wholesome Namibian country cooking or possibly a braai (African term for barbecue).

Each of the 26, air-conditioned (solar powered) rustic rock chalets at Desert Homestead has an en suite bathroom and stunning views over the desert plains. They are eco-friendly being powered by wind and solar power during the daytime hours. All toiletries are also environmentally friendly. Seven of the chalets offer family accommodation with three or four beds and a more spacious family suite with two bedrooms and a shared bathroom.

Activities

Tranquil afternoons at the swimming pool can be combined with sundowner drives or perhaps a sunset horse ride across the plains of Namibia. The horse trails at Desert Homestead are very popular. All the horses are well trained and easy to ride. You can explore the grass-studded plains and ancient river dry beds of the desert on sunrise or sunset rides.  Sundowners on horseback are a particularly memorable experience as the sunset of Namibia is one not to ever be missed!

The Desert Homestead has excellent riding horses, all docile and easy to handle. You can choose between several outrides options. Most popular are the sunrise and sunset rides. On the sunrise ride guests meet for tea, coffee and biscuits at sunrise and then drive across to the stables. Once the horses and riders are ready and comfortable, the ride begins. The scenery varies quite dramatically, from dry river beds to massive camel thorn trees, to mountain paths and wide open grassy plains.

Great accommodation and tours
"Accommodation and tours were great especially the Sossusvlei tour. Food was a bit random in combinations. " -
