Cleopatra Mountain Farm house, in the Drakensberg mountains of KwaZulu Natal, is a luxury gourmet retreat tucked deep into the mountains. Its picturesque location, beside a beautiful dam, is not far from Giants Castle Reserve and Kamberg Nature Reserve with their famous San (Bushmen) Rock Art. The Farm house is surrounded by excellent walking country. it lies only 5 minutes away from the Natal Parks with some flat easy walks on offer as well as more traditional mountain walks.
However Cleopatra Mountain Farm house is mostly known for Richard's legendary 'foodie' dinners, and breakfasts. Excitingly different, Richard offers fine gourmet food using local ingredients and home-grown herbs. He's written a cookery book outlining some of his signature dishes and delicious 3-course dinners are the order of the day. You'll need a hike or two to walk off the glorious food on offer, even the breakfast! Dining at the Farm house takes place in a charming atmospheric dining room which is cantilevered over the crystal clear dam.
The decor at Cleopatra is individual with many artefacts to interest and amuse its visitors. The 11 rooms and suites are quite quirky but welcoming. All have television, separate showers, crisp cotton sheets, mohair blankets and heated under-blankets. Note this is not a minimalist decor style. We recommend the Executive suites or cottages for people who prefer a more understated style.
Activities at Cleopatra Mountain Farm house include walking, visiting the nearby San rock art at Kamberg and Giants Castle, horse riding, birding and trout fishing in nearby dams and rivers. The enchanting Midlands Meander can also easily be visited with its range of arts and crafts studios and boutique shops, as well as the Crane rehabilitation centre.
A wonderfully relaxing place to stay and put on weight! The rooms all have their own style and the place has a nice relaxed feel. I was expecting the wonderful food, but had not realised what a great setting Cleopatra has – lovely gardens to sit in a lounger, read a book and look at the hills. Or put on your hiking boots and take a stroll.
