Overview

  • Chamilandu Bush Camp has a prime river location right on the Luangwa River
  • Seven ox-bow lagoons nearby yields a diversity of species
  • Focus on walking safaris
  • Offers both walking safaris and 4x4 night drives

Chamilandu Bush Camp offers comfort, class and beauty in one of the South Luangwa National Park’s prime river locations. Its claim to fame is the glorious river view from the three reed and thatch tree-house rooms over the Luangwa river.

Indeed there’s nothing quite like waking up at Chamilandu Bush Camp. Early morning views don’t get much better than the rippling waters of the Luangwa River, the gentle rise of the Chindeni Hills and a vast African sky – especially when you’re lying in a four poster bed in a stilted tree-house. You don’t even need to leave your bed to see the wildlife as animals roam across the landscape and birds call above you.

Accommodation

Each of the three exquisite tree-houses is perched right on the water’s edge with a raised deck for relaxing during the day. Simply decorated, each has a wrought iron four poster bed with mosquito net and en suite bathroom which is completely open to the views of the tranquil river (with an optional curtain for privacy from the hippo’s gaze.) Solar power provides lighting, battery charging facilities and hot water. Down at ground level, you can enjoy a sundowner at the thatched bar and dining area, as you watch the wildlife do the same at the river close by.

Activities

A series of seven ox-box lagoons in the immediate area yields a diversity of species and attracts abundant wildlife. Chamilandu Bush Camp offers both walking safaris and night drives by game vehicle. The hide at Chamilandu Bush Camp looks out over one of these lagoons and is the perfect place to take lunch or tea. Alternatively, while away an afternoon in a hammock to the soundtrack of bathing elephant.

The focus of Chamilandu Bush Camp is on walking safaris. If you would prefer to do a mix of game drives and occasional walks, then we recommend a different camp! Contact us to chat to one of our consultants for suggestions.

Usually morning tea/coffee and snacks are followed by a 3-4 hour bush walk. Afterwards you have a substantial brunch meal and time to relax before tea and an afternoon bush activity. You’ll normally walk for 1-2 hours until sunset and then enjoy a night game drive, but you might have a game drive if all guests prefer this. It’s very important to note that the Bushcamp Company assumes that you’re keen to walk.

Chamilandu Bush Camp is run by the Bushcamp Company which operates six such bush camps, all varying in character and location. Many are within walking distance of each other. This gives you the option of walking from one camp to the next, with your luggage being portered separately so that it is waiting for you on arrival.

Exceptional game viewing and understated elegance make Chamilandu a place to remember. It is a seasonal camp open from June to mid November.

House Chalets

Traditional décor adorns the 2-meter high tree house chalets (only 3 chalets in camp). The tasteful blend of wrought iron and brass offsets the thatch and wood that welcome you to recline and relax. Black mosquito netting allows guests to retain an uninterrupted view of the Luangwa River and Chindeni Hills at night under the moonlight and stars above. Open to a 180° vista, each tree house provides an exciting frame of the surrounding Luangwa Valley. The four-poster beds enjoy a bird’s eye view over the Luangwa River and the abundant wildlife that has made the valley famous. With the magnificent Chindeni Hills as the backdrop for your view, Chamilandu affords you the majesty of Africa in all its forms. Outdoor bathrooms adjoin each chalet with a large shower and double vanities under the open sky.
