Shamwari was the original malaria-free game reserve in the Eastern Cape and remains at the forefront of conservation in the area. One of Shamwari's strengths is that it lies at the convergence of five ecosystems and this diversity supports the Big Five (elephant, lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo) as well as varied antelope and a rich bird life. This beautiful 20,000ha malaria-free reserve is situated in the verdant bush along the Bushmans River. Luxury accommodation is offered at six game lodges on the reserve, quite diverse in their appearance.

Bayethe Tented Lodge is a luxury tented lodge of twelve suites. 'By-ye-ti' is the welcoming greeting you will receive on your arrival at this splendid stone-walled and thatch lodge. In our opinion, Bayethe is one of the nicest lodges at Shamwari, (alongside the more expensive Eagle's Crag Lodge), as it has a true authentic bush feel and yet is still luxurious.

The attractive main lodge of stone and thatch has a double volume sitting and dining area. Massive glass walls which can be folded back to open the lodge to the bush, or closed in the chilly winter evenings. There’s an adjacent outside Boma for traditional fireside dining under the stars.

The delightful little thatched bar is set right on the edge of a dam, perfect for lunchtime drinks or even relaxing during the quiet hours of the afternoon. Early morning and evening game viewing drives in open land rovers as well as guided nature walks and bird watching are all part of this magnificent experience.

Accommodation

Each of the twin-bedded tented suites at Shamwari Bayethe is nestled along the bed of the river, camouflaged under trees allowing ample privacy and unsurpassed comforts. Each tented suite is air-conditioned with en-suite bathroom, outdoor shower as well as its own private plunge pool and viewing deck.

Why not treat yourself to one of the three premier suites at Bayethe Tented Lodge. These are an avant-garde masterpiece of canvas and stone. Decorated in a striking contemporary style, they are nevertheless soft and inviting with wooden floors, canvas sides and glass sliding doors, offering the latest in tented luxury. A spacious bedroom area leads to a sitting area. The glass doors lead onto a wooden deck with private plunge pool and hammocks. A stylish open plan bathroom is off to one side with enclosed toilet and outdoor shower. All have tea/coffee facilities, safe, minibar and telephone.

Shamwari is at the forefront of sustainable eco-tourism. Conservation at Shamwari is about the development, management and rehabilitation of the Eastern Cape bushveld to create a sustainable eco-system through the ongoing implementation of conservation principals. Their wildlife department includes a breeding centre, an education centre and a team of ecologists, environmentalists and game-management experts.

Please note: Bayethe Tented Lodge is located slightly away from the main part of the Shamwari Game Reserve on its own concession area so you do have to drive a little further to get to the main part of the reserve when on your game drives.

Superb
"Bayethe Lodge superb. Not a complaint, but staying there involves extra 45 minutes travel on each game drive to even reach the viewing areas, which in bad weather is a factor. " -
