Savute Under Canvas offer you a unique opportunity to experience the exhilaration of a mobile camping safari with the luxury of a tented camp. This mobile camping offers you a great diversity of wildlife and landscapes. The camp moves every 5 or 6 days and is usually positioned by a waterhole to maximize your 'armchair game-viewing' as wildlife viewing from the camp is often called. It is booked on a nightly basis - so you choose how many nights you want. We recommend combining a stay at Savute under Canvas with another more traditional camp so that you get the best of both worlds.
Though you cannot expect the same facilities as a permanent camp, you have a fair degree of comfort. Accommodation is in spacious 4m x 4m Hemingway-style tents, each with double bed, canvas wardrobe and luggage chest. Lighting is provided by rechargeable batteries on your bedside table. There's an en suite bathroom, with a flush toilet, basin, shaving mirror, hot water jug and steaming hot bucket shower (hot water delivered upon request but it’s usually ready when you return from your game drive). Meals and drinks at Savute Under Canvas are usually provided around a campfire where you can chat with your fellow guests about your day's game-viewing. There's also a central 'mess' tent for relaxing during the day with a bar table with complimentary drinks, reference books and board games.
During the rainy season, the Savuti area of the Chobe National Park hosts the annual zebra migration, which peaks in January and February when the zebra and wildebeest congregate in vast numbers to graze on the sweeter grasses brought on by the rains. It is not uncommon to also catch sight of leopard, cheetah and African wild dog stalking the zebra. The Savuti also supports the greatest concentration of the king of all beasts - the lion.
The landscape around Savute Under Canvas is strikingly different from the lush Chobe riverfront to the north, with an almost desert-like feeling that has animals escaping the heat by standing together in the shade of the odd tree. The stark dead trees found in the Savuti channel are evidence of an erratic flow of the Savute River over the years - however it is currently flowing again after a few years of good rains. Activities at Savute Under Canvas include twice-daily 4x4 safari game drives in the Savuti area of Chobe National Park with your experienced rangers.
Please note that all our Savute camps are IN the Chobe National park, and thus no night drives and bush walks are allowed by the parks authorities but the quality of the game-viewing more than makes up for this.
