Amakhala Safari Lodge is hidden in a remote kloof overlooking the indigenous bushveld. African tribal design inspired the creation of this intimate thatched lodge with fine African bead work and handcrafted designs all around. Its unique safari chalets offer all of the creature comforts of a comfortable four star lodge, and a bit more.
Game activities include open vehicle game drives, bush walks, river cruises (if staying two or more nights). A unique feature of Safari Lodge is that 3 night stays also include a full morning visit to Addo Elephant Park with a packed picnic breakfast. This gives you the opportunity to see a completely different game reserve and is a good complement to Amakhala.
The chalets are partially tented to give an authentic safari ambiance. The tent's sides can be unzipped to open up the chalet to the bush to bring the sounds and fragrances of the bush right into the room. You can lie in the bath with a view over the valley and feel like you are bathing outside! Each of the tented suites has their own deck, private plunge pool and sun loungers. Some overlook the waterhole, others are more in the forest. Each has a separate sitting area (which can also accommodate an extra child) with a bathroom with indoor bath and outdoor shower, as well as a completely separate toilet.
The public areas comprise a series of small rounded rooms housing a lounge, dining area, separate quiet library room and safari shop. There’s also a fire-pit overlooking the waterhole and a charming little boma with its own star-gazing platform complete with telescope where you may be treated to a star talk after dinner. Massages are on offer either in your own room or in the Spa room.
Its intimate style and romantic baths make this a favourite with honeymoon couples but the spacious accommodation with separate sitting alcove means that it can also work for families with older children. Amakhala Safari Lodge is an owner-run lodge with friendly charming hosts, Mike and Justine Weeks.
