The 7,500ha Amakhala Game Reserve, about one hour from Port Elizabeth, offers malaria-free game viewing in the Eastern Cape. 'Amakhala' is named after the Xhosa word meaning ‘aloe’, the prolific indigenous plant found in this uniquely diverse province.
Steeped in history and beauty, this game reserve creates an ideal environment for an unforgettable safari and an intimate experience of the varied landscape, including breathtaking views of the Bushman's River.
The tranquil Amakhala Bukela Game Lodge is situated in the heart of the reserve, probably the most luxurious of all its lodges. There are only four thatched suites (3 suites and 1 honeymoon suite with greater privacy and a four poster bed) each individually styled in African simplicity while never compromising on luxury. This secluded safari destination is tucked away into indigenous trees and bushes at the top of a hidden valley and has the perfect setting for an intimate and romantic safari experience.
The main buildings comprise a winter lounge and dining area, separate lounge with open sides to enjoy the bush views, swimming pool and hidden small boma area. Connected by a wooden walkway, the four spacious thatched suites offer a remarkable private wildlife-viewing experience. Each has a sitting room area, bedroom, semi-open plan bathroom with spa bath, indoor and outdoor shower and enclosed toilet. There’s air-conditioning for the summer, and an open fireplace for the winter months. There are also five spacious tented suites under thatch which share the same facilities.
Morning and afternoon-evening game drives are offered with informative professional rangers in open 4x4 safari vehicles. Savour a crisp glass of wine in your sun-soaked spa bath. Indulge in sumptuous high teas, private candlelit dinners or evocative fireside boma dinners under the African stars. And as you fall asleep, hear the silence broken by the unmistakeable sounds of elephant and buffalo making their stately progress through the unfenced camp.
