The renowned Duba Plains Camp sits in the heart of classic Okavango Delta. This 77,000-acre private concession typifies the regionâs unique landscape with a matrix of palm-dotted islands, flood plains and woodland.
Duba Plains Camp is a wildlife connoisseurâs getaway. Built on a wooded island, connected to the prolific wildlife area by an elaborate set of bridges, the camp is the base of many famous wildlife documentaries by National Geographic filmmakers Derek and Beverly Joubert. It is the only camp in the concession, offering you the ultimate opportunity for private game-viewing.
Duba Plains prides itself on its extraordinary wildlife experiences. The mammoth interaction between large buffalo herds and Dubaâs lion prides retains its lure. But with the increase in water in the last decade, this experience is now complemented by reliable sightings of a diverse range of species, including large herds of Red lechwe along with Blue wildebeest, kudu, tsessebe. And usually a rare visitor to Duba - Â but now more common - giraffe.
Of course, you regularly see elephant and hippo, trudging through the swamps happily. Wildlife is a regular sight right in camp, or even from the outdoor showers! The area is known as a birdwatcherâs paradise. Okavango âspecialsâ include the rare wattled crane, Pelâs fishing owl, white-backed night heron and marsh owl.
The intimate camp consists of five luxurious tented suites, each decorated in a colonial style. These are on raised private decks with views of the surrounding floodplain. Each has an en suite bathroom with flush loo, double basins and indoor shower and outdoor showers and a luxurious bath. Enjoy your private deck complete with plunge pool and shaded sala.
The main area is under thatch and consists of a large raised dining room, cozy bar and comfortable lounge. Extending from this main area is a raised wood deck with pool and a dining area. Here brunch is often served under the shade of large African ebony trees. In the evenings, the fire pit is always a popular spot to enjoy an Amarula and recount the dayâs events.
The aim at Duba Plains is to make your safari experience as flexible as possible. So you can opt for a full day drive or a full morning safari with breakfast in the bush. If you feel like it, you can spend the afternoon in your suite, enjoying game-viewing from your deck. Game drives (day & night) take place in Duba Plainâs Toyota Land Cruisers. They are aptly named âSwamp Vehiclesâ due to their extra-high suspension and huge tyres, uniquely designed to traverse the floodplains. Alterntaively you can appreciate the stunning landscape on foot in the early morning or evening. Motorized boating - zipping through the Okavango Delta's network of waterways - is an invigorating way to get a sense of the scope of this huge wetland. (Boating is a seasonal activity, typically between May and October depending on the flood levels).
Duba Plains Camp offers a full syllabus of bush craft skills for their 'young explorers'. A kid's pack is given to eager children on arrival, so they can learn about animal calls, how to track wildlife, and other facts and figures about the wild. At the end of a childâs stay, hthey'll become a Young Explorer and Conservation Ambassador. Ready to go out and tell the world about what they have learned.
Food at Duba Plains -Â There's a big focus on food at Duba Plains with an inter-active kitchen. They also aim to communicate some of the conservation stories through their food.
