Little Makalolo Camp

Overview

Little Makalolo Camp is one of the few camps actually inside Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe and certainly one of the most comfortable. It lies in a teak forest in the remote Makalolo concession in the eastern part of Hwange. The area is ecologically diverse, ensuring a varied food 'pantry', which feeds great numbers of animals year round. Little Makalolo is one of the best areas for predators, buffalo and elephant. The many waterholes in the area ensure good game-viewing, especially in the dry winter months when the animals are desperate for water. Indeed Little Makalolo lies in one of the best areas for predators, buffalo and elephant.

Accommodation at Little MakaloloThe camp's six spacious tented chalets are light and airy with stylish modern furnishings including a writing desk, box safe and a day bed for those all-important siestas. En suite bathrooms at Little Makalolo have a flush toilet, set slightly away, copper basins and a shower with hot and cold running water - as well as an outdoor shower under the stars. Solar power providing hot water and lighting ensures a lighter ecological footprint.

Facilities

False mopane trees shade the main living and dining areas, which are also under canvas, as well as the raised deck with its views over the much frequented waterhole. There's also a small library with books and board games at Little Makalolo Camp. In front is an outdoor fire pit which provides a happy focal point for pre-dinner drinks. During the siesta hours between morning and afternoon game activities you can enjoy the small plunge pool or spend some time in the log pile hide overlooking the busy waterhole.

Activities

Activities at Little Makalolo Camp revolve around open 4x4 game drives throughout the private Makalolo concession area, as well as walks with armed guides which we highly recommend. Little Makalolo also provides support to two community-run schools in the nearby village of Ngamo and you can ask to visit these school projects.

Families with children of six years and older are welcome at Little Makalolo Camp. There is one family tent which consists of two adjoining tents sharing a bathroom sleeping up to four. However families with children under 12 years do have to take a private landrover.
